Where to Place the Thermostat at Home for Accurate Temperature Readings?

A poorly placed thermostat will make you feel too cold, too hot, and pay more for electricity. Discover the worst and best places to install it.

You have an excellent ducted AC or aerothermal system, but you feel like the house is never at the right temperature. Sometimes it's freezing cold, and other times it doesn't cool enough. The culprit, in 90% of cases, is the location of the thermostat.

The thermostat is the "brain" of your climate control. If it reads a false temperature, it will give incorrect commands to the machine.

    ### The WORST places to install a thermostat 1. Near windows or exterior doors: Drafts of hot or cold air will fool the sensor. 2. In direct sunlight: If the sun shines through the window directly onto the thermostat, it will think the house is at 35ºC and run the AC at maximum, freezing the rest of the home. 3. Near heat sources: Never place it above a radiator, near the kitchen oven, or next to halogen lamps that emit heat. 4. In closed hallways or dead corners: If air doesn't circulate in that area, the thermostat won't be able to measure the actual ambient temperature of your living space.

    ### The BEST places to install it - On an interior wall of the living room or main area: The place where the family spends the most time is the best reference point. - At a height of 1.5 meters (5 feet): Hot air rises and cold air falls. Placing it at mid-height guarantees a perfect average reading. - On an interior wall away from drafts: Avoid walls that face the exterior of the building directly, as they can be colder or hotter than the interior.

If you have a smart thermostat and still have issues, you might need zoning (like Airzone) to control each room independently.
