Signs Your Cold Room Motor is Failing

A commercial refrigeration compressor motor doesn't usually break down from one second to the next without warning. Normally, it spends weeks or months giving "complaints" that kitchen staff often ignore due to the usual noise of the restaurant.
If you pay attention to these 4 signs, you can repair the equipment before a total failure occurs and you lose all your merchandise.
### 1. The motor never turns off Refrigeration systems work in cycles: they start, lower the temperature to the desired point, and stop. If you notice that the noise of the compressor (located on top of the room or outside) is continuous and never pauses, it means the machine is struggling to reach the temperature and failing. This could be due to a lack of refrigerant gas, a frozen evaporator, or internal wear.
### 2. Ice buildup on the indoor evaporator If you walk into the cold room and see that the fan unit on the ceiling (the evaporator) looks like an igloo covered in white ice, you have a serious problem. Ice acts as an insulator, preventing the cold from passing into the air of the room. This usually happens because the defrost heater element has burned out.
### 3. Metallic noises or excessive vibrations A soft hum is normal. But if you hear a metallic rattling, squealing (like a slipping belt), or vibrations that shake the structure, the fan bearings or compressor valves are about to collapse.
### 4. Skyrocketing electricity bill If your electricity bill has inexplicably gone up in recent months and you haven't added new machinery, it is highly likely that the refrigeration motors are working twice as long due to a loss of efficiency or dirt in the condensers.
