A blocked sink or toilet is an emergency. Before calling for a blocked drain Spain service, try these home methods.
Why does the sink constantly get blocked?
The kitchen sink is undoubtedly the hardest-working pipe in the whole house. A blockage rarely happens overnight; it is the result of months of accumulated residue. The main culprits are:
- 1.Cooking oil and grease: This is enemy number one. Hot oil looks liquid when you pour it down the drain, but as it cools inside the pipe, it solidifies, creating a sticky paste that traps everything else.
- 2.Food scraps: Coffee grounds, rice grains, eggshells, and small food remnants that slip through the plughole.
- 3.Accumulated soap scum: Some low-quality powder detergents or dishwasher tablets leave a chalky residue that reduces the diameter of the pipe over time.
Home unblocking methods
If the blockage is mild and the water is still draining very slowly, you can try these home remedies. Warning: Avoid overusing chemical drain unblockers from the supermarket; they are highly corrosive, dangerous to handle, and, if your pipes are old PVC or lead, the chemical heat they generate can melt or perforate them.
- ▸Baking soda and vinegar: Half a cup each — wait 15 minutes, then flush with boiling water. Great for unblocking a sink.
- ▸Manual plunger: Use firm, rhythmic strokes to create suction pressure.
- ▸Clean the P-trap: Place a bucket underneath, unscrew the trap, and clean it manually. This also removes bad odours.
