### What is phantom load? It is the electrical consumption of electronic devices that are permanently connected to the grid, waiting to receive a command to turn on (via remote control) or maintaining a digital clock.
### How much does it cost you per year? According to energy studies, phantom consumption can account for between 7% and 11% of the total electrical consumption of a home. On an average bill, this can translate to 50 to 100 euros wasted annually.
The biggest culprits: - TV decoders and gaming consoles: They are the kings of hidden consumption. - Televisions and soundbars: Especially older models. - Computers and monitors: If not turned off at the power strip. - Microwaves and ovens: Due to the constant digital display.
### How to avoid it without going crazy? The most practical solution isn't unplugging cables one by one. The ideal approach is to use power strips with switches (or smart strips) to group devices. For example, one strip for the TV area and another for the computer. Turn off the switch at night and cut phantom consumption at the root.
