Hard water in central Spain can quickly damage your electric water heater (termo eléctrico). The high concentration of calcium and magnesium in the water supply acts as a silent killer for the internal heating elements and the tank itself. Regular maintenance prevents premature failure and unexpected cold showers.
Common Issues with Water Heaters
- ▸Water Heater Leaking: Often due to high internal pressure, a failed pressure relief valve, or, worst-case scenario, a rusted and corroded tank. If the tank itself is leaking brown water, it cannot be repaired and must be replaced immediately to prevent flooding.
- ▸No Hot Water: Usually caused by a failed heating element (covered in limescale) or a broken thermostat.
- ▸Tripping the Circuit Breaker: If turning on the hot water trips your home's electricity, the heating element has likely split and is leaking current into the water.
