When looking for a new air conditioner or requesting a repair for your current unit in Madrid, it is highly likely that the technician will ask or talk to you about the type of refrigerant gas: Does it use R410A or the new R32?

Understanding the difference will help you make better decisions regarding the maintenance and upgrading of your equipment.

    ### The old standard: R410A Gas For years, R410A was the king of the market. It replaced older gases because it didn't deplete the ozone layer. However, it has a serious problem: its Global Warming Potential (GWP) is very high (around 2088). Due to European regulations, this gas is being phased out. Equipment using it is becoming increasingly expensive to recharge because the gas itself carries massive environmental taxes.

    ### The new standard: R32 Gas R32 is the gas used by all modern air conditioning and aerothermal systems. Its advantages are overwhelming: 1. More eco-friendly: Its impact on global warming is 68% lower than R410A. 2. More efficient: It requires less gas (about 30% less) to achieve the same level of cooling, reducing electricity consumption. 3. Cheaper to recharge: Because it carries lower environmental taxes, gas recharges in the event of a leak are considerably cheaper. 4. It is pure: Unlike R410A (which is a blend), R32 is a pure gas, making it easier for technicians to recycle and handle.

    ### Can I put R32 gas in my old unit? No. Compressors designed for R410A cannot operate with R32 due to differences in working pressures and lubricating oils. If your old unit is constantly leaking gas, the most cost-effective option in the medium term is to replace the entire machine.
