Is it Dangerous to Use Power Strips or Adapters for Many Plugs?

Connecting multiple devices into a single wall outlet using cheap power strips or multi-plug adapters can overload your system. Discover the risks.

We've all done it: behind the TV or under the office desk, we plug a power strip into a wall outlet, and sometimes, we even plug another power strip into the first one!

While it seems like a quick fix for the lack of outlets in older Madrid homes, this practice hides significant risks.

    ### The power limit of an outlet A standard wall outlet is designed to handle a maximum amperage (usually 16 Amps, about 3,680 Watts). When you use a multi-plug adapter or power strip, you are not increasing the wall's capacity; you are simply dividing that same capacity among more appliances.

    ### What happens if you plug in too many things? 1. Thermal overload: If you plug high-consumption appliances (like a space heater, an iron, and a hair dryer) into the same strip, you will quickly exceed the limit. The wall wire and the strip's wire will heat up, potentially melting the plastic and starting a fire. 2. Short circuits due to poor quality: Many cheap multi-plugs lack internal protection and proper grounding. Over time, the contacts loosen and generate sparks (electrical arcs) that are invisible from the outside. 3. Daisy-chaining effect: Connecting power strips in a chain drastically increases electrical resistance, generating excessive heat that the automatic breakers in the panel sometimes take too long to detect.

    ### Golden rules for using power strips - Never plug in large appliances: Refrigerators, washing machines, ovens, or heaters must go directly into the wall. - Buy quality power strips: Ensure they have the CE mark, a thick cable, a cutoff switch, and surge protection. - The ultimate solution: If you need so many power strips, it's a clear sign that your home needs more wall outlets.
