Unlike paint or flooring, the pipes in a house are hidden, which means we tend to forget about them until it is too late. However, if your property in Madrid or Toledo is more than 20 or 25 years old and has never been renovated, it is highly likely that your pipes are a ticking time bomb.

Replacing the plumbing installation in Spain is not an aesthetic whim; it is an absolute necessity to prevent catastrophic leaks, improve water pressure, and protect your family's health.

Why you must replace old pipes urgently

Building regulations have evolved enormously. If your house is very old, you could be living with materials that are now banned or strongly advised against:

    1. 1.Lead pipes: Very common in historic buildings in central Madrid. Lead is toxic and slowly releases into the water you drink and use for cooking. Replacing them is urgent for health reasons.
    2. 2.Galvanized steel or iron pipes: Massively used in the 70s and 80s. Over time, they rust from the inside. If you notice the water runs brown when you open the tap after being away for a few days, or if you have lost a lot of water pressure in the shower, it is because rust and limescale have almost completely blocked the pipe. Sooner or later, the iron will pit and cause a major leak.
    3. 3.Old copper pipes: Although copper is excellent, old soldering suffers from wear and tear due to temperature changes (expansion and contraction), which eventually causes hidden micro-leaks in the walls.

Modern pipe materials: Multilayer and PEX

When we carry out a complete plumbing renovation at PowerPro Madrid, we use the latest generation materials, primarily multilayer composite pipes or cross-linked polyethylene (PEX).

These advanced plastic materials offer unbeatable advantages: they never rust, they do not accumulate limescale inside (keeping water pressure intact for decades), they are flexible (which reduces joints and the risk of leaks), and they withstand extremely high temperatures and pressures. Furthermore, their installation is much faster than soldering copper, which lowers labor costs.

How much does it really cost to replace pipes in an apartment in Madrid?

The plumbing budget for a full renovation depends fundamentally on the number of "wet rooms" (bathrooms and kitchen) and whether you are taking the opportunity to replace sanitary ware.

To give you a realistic reference for 2024: - Renovating the plumbing of a full bathroom: Usually ranges between €700 and €1,200. - Renovating the plumbing of a kitchen: Between €600 and €1,000. - Standard apartment (1 bathroom + 1 kitchen): The complete replacement of the cold water, hot water, and general drainage network can cost between €1,500 and €2,500.

To this, you will have to add the masonry costs (chipping tiles, covering chases, and retiling), so the best time to replace pipes is when you decide to aesthetically renovate the bathroom or kitchen.
