When your air conditioning is not blowing cold air in the middle of a Madrid summer, or the unit is leaking water down your living room wall, it's time to call an English speaking air conditioning installer Spain. Knowing the most common causes of breakdowns helps you decide when to act and prevents minor issues from becoming expensive disasters.
Most common air conditioning faults
### 1. Dirty filters Blocked filters reduce airflow and cause the unit to overwork. If the air coming out feels weak, this is the first thing to check. Solution: clean or replace the filters (often a simple DIY job).
### 2. Low refrigerant gas If the AC is blowing air but it is not cooling properly despite clean filters, there is likely a gas leak in the copper pipes. You will need an AC gas refill. Important: Refrigerant gas does not "run out" or evaporate; if it's missing, there is a leak that must be found and sealed by an F-Gas certified technician before refilling.
### 3. Compressor failure The compressor is the heart of the system and the most critical component. Strange metallic noises, the unit tripping the circuit breaker, or the outdoor unit starting but not cooling may indicate compressor failure. This repair requires a specialist and, in old units, it might be more cost-effective to replace the whole machine.
### 4. Water leaks and condensation If the indoor air conditioner is leaking water, this is usually a blocked drain. The condensation water cannot escape outside and overflows the internal drip tray. The solution is to unblock and clean the drainage pipe.
